B2B lead generation tools, and which problem each one solves

The short answer

The tools in this category look interchangeable and are not. They fall into four groups, and most of the money wasted here goes on buying from the wrong group rather than picking the wrong product inside it.

Three of the groups hand you one piece of the go-to-market motion and leave the rest as your work. The fourth runs the motion end to end.

Decide which of those you are actually buying before you compare features.

The four groups

You do not have enough contacts

Databases you search

Apollo, ZoomInfo, Lusha, Cognism

You filter by title, industry and headcount, and export what matches. Cheap per contact and fast if you know your filters. You still decide who actually fits and you still write every email.

You want a pipeline nobody else has

Workbenches you build on

Clay

You assemble the workflow yourself from data providers, enrichment steps and prompts. The highest ceiling in the category, and it stays high only while somebody keeps maintaining the thing they built.

You have a list and copy already

Sequencers that send

Lemlist, Instantly, Smartlead

Warmup, sending, follow-ups, branching, deliverability. Excellent at the half of outbound that happens after the thinking. They assume the list and the words already exist.

You have neither the list nor the hours

Done for you

Wisemation

You describe the buyer in a sentence. Finding, verifying, researching, writing and sending all happen without you assembling them. You approve every lead and answer your own replies.

Common questions

What is the cheapest way to start?

Most tools in the category have a free tier or a trial, so the honest answer is to run the same buyer description through two of them and compare what comes out. Apollo has a free plan with 900 credits per seat per year, Clay has a free tier, Lemlist runs a 14-day trial with no permanent free plan, and Wisemation gives you 10 leads without a card. ZoomInfo does not publish pricing at all.

Do I need a database and a sequencer, or one tool?

Two tools is the normal setup, and it works. A database gives you contacts, a sequencer sends to them, and you supply the judgment and the writing in between. That middle part is the hidden cost, and it is the reason most sequences never launch. One tool only makes sense if it covers that middle.

Which is best if nobody on the team is a full-time salesperson?

Start from what a bad send costs you. If you can absorb a low reply rate and want reach, a database plus a sequencer is the cheapest route to volume. If your domain and your name have to survive the campaign, and the next twenty customers are likely to come from reputation rather than reach, the sourcing and the writing are the parts worth paying for and volume is the part worth giving up.

Does any of this replace hiring an SDR?

Not entirely. These tools remove the list building and the drafting, which is most of the hours, but somebody still has to answer replies and run the conversations. Wisemation starts conversations. It does not have them for you.
