Women-owned businesses: how to find them by industry and region

The short answer

Write one sentence, such as "women who own construction companies in Texas", and add "women only". Wisemation finds the businesses a woman owns or runs and gives you the owner with a checked work email.

It works for any industry and any region, because it searches the web, not one directory. You get the owner, not just the name of the firm.

What is a women-owned business?

A women-owned business is a firm that is at least 51% owned and run by women. That is the bar the two main US certifications use: WBENC for corporate supplier programs and the SBA's WOSB program for federal contracts.

About 1.4 million US employer firms are owned by women, 22.9% of all firms with staff (US Census Bureau, 2025). That count leaves out the women who work on their own, with no staff.

Who looks for women-owned businesses?

Supplier diversity and procurement teams with a goal for spend with women-owned firms.

Contractors bidding on public work, where many contracts set a share for women- and minority-owned subcontractors.

Shops and distributors that want to stock women-owned brands.

Companies that sell to women owners: software, equipment, finance and marketing.

How do you find women-owned businesses?

Write one sentence and add "women only". Wisemation writes that down as a rule about the person, so the search itself looks for women, not just the companies.

Then every first name is read before a lead counts, in most searches before the email check and the research even start. People read as men are dropped and cost 0 lead credits.

It reads the first name the way a person would, together with the country. It does not use photos, and it does not ask anyone anything.

Name the place as a city, a state or a country. The search reads meaning, not keywords, so "owner" also finds a founder, a principal or a managing partner.

Ask for the owner, founder or CEO, women only. That finds the firms a woman runs, and the person you talk to about the work.

Directory, bought list or search?

Certifying bodies keep directories of the firms they certified, and a firm is only listed if it applied. A search finds the firms a woman runs whether certified or not, with the owner's email.

What does it not do?

It does not check certification. It finds firms run by a woman. If a contract needs a certified women-owned business (WBE, WOSB or your country's version), check each firm in the certifier's own directory before you count it.

Not for hiring. "Women only" works on sales searches. On a search for job candidates it is switched off.

No phone numbers. It finds work emails and LinkedIn profiles, not direct dials.
