How to find high-net-worth individuals: follow the public signs of wealth
The short answer
You cannot see a bank account. But wealth leaves public traces: a company sale in the news, a place on a rich list, a share register, a tax list. Search for the traces, not the label.
And go through their company. Many wealthy people hold their money in a family investment company, a single-family office or a holding company, and a company can be found.
High earners are different. A big salary leaves almost no trace, so the search has to find senior roles at companies with 50 or more staff.

Why does a search for wealthy people find the wrong people?
Because the people who write "high-net-worth" on their websites are the people who serve them: wealth managers, private bankers, mortgage brokers and estate agents. Wealthy people rarely describe themselves that way, so a keyword search for the label finds their advisers.
There is a second problem. A private person has no company website, and B2B search finds companies first. So the search needs a company to find.
How do you reach wealthy people? Through their own company
Many wealthy people hold their money in a company of their own: a single-family office, a family investment company, a personal holding company or a private family foundation. Those have names, websites and register entries. That is the company to search for, and its owner or principal is the person.
Leave out the companies that serve outside clients, such as multi-family offices, wealth managers, private banks and brokers. They are full of staff who manage money that is not theirs.
The second route is a sale. A founder who sold a company in the last 12 months is in the news, with the buyer named and often the price. It is the cleanest public trace there is.
Which public signs show that someone is wealthy?
The strongest public signs of wealth are a place on a rich list, the sale of a company, a large holding in a listed company, a public income record (in Finland, Norway and Sweden) and ownership of a profitable company. Each person gets points for every sign found, and every sign must be quoted from the page it came from.
A job title says little about money on its own, so titles score low. A sign only counts when its words are on the page: if the quote is not there, the sign is dropped.

How do you find high earners?
A partner at a large law firm can earn more than many business owners and leave almost no public trace of it. In most countries income is private. So a search for high earners has to find the right jobs at the right companies, not the right word.
The single most useful rule: leave out companies under 50 staff. Anyone can call themselves CEO, and a chief executive of a one-person consultancy is not a high earner. With a staff floor, the search returns the heads and senior partners of real companies.
Finland, Norway and Sweden publish personal taxable income every year, and the press prints it. There, a tax record can count as a sign, but only when the page also names the person's region or company, so a namesake never counts.

Questions about finding high-net-worth individuals
What is a high-net-worth individual?
In wealth management, a high-net-worth individual usually means someone with at least $1 million in investable assets, and an ultra-high-net-worth individual at least $30 million. The thresholds vary by bank and country.
Can I buy a list of high-net-worth individuals?
Lists are sold, but a list is only as good as the day it was built, and it rarely says why each person is on it. A search built on public signs gives you the reason for every person, checked when they are found.
Does this work in Europe?
Yes. It searches the web, not one country's database. The Nordic countries add a sign other countries lack: public income records.
How many signs are checked?
17 kinds of public sign, from a place on a rich list down to a long career. Each has fixed points, and 35 or more counts as strong.
